TV Station in Trouble Over Unsensored Breast Exam - WJLA

Where is the line between medical advice and selling sex on TV to get ratings? A Washington, DC TV station may find out soon after viewers expressed displeasure over a breast exam piece that may have show a little too much flesh.

An ABC affiliate in Washington D.C. WJLA, will be airing uncensored breast exams during their nightly newscast as part of an “educational” series during November sweeps.

The exams will feature two volunteers who will appear topless and demonstrate the procedure to be aired on the 5 pm and 11 pm newscasts during a critical week when TV stations try to garner ad revenue and sponsorships going into the winter months.

Because of the timing of this “educational segment” during November sweeps, prominent womens groups and parents groups were quick to speak out on the subject, calling this a “ratings stunt” and that the station is “exploiting women for gain”.

A representative of one such group, Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America told ABC news that breast-exam demonstrations using mannequins or diagrams are equally effective in teaching the public about self-exams and should be used instead of exploiting women for ad revenue.
